Society tends to labels people, or as I call it, putting them into a box , but each of us has something in common, we're all human.
Sports help with raising awareness, this summer has been a big year for the Olympics and Paralympics. I pick sport as a example, as people of all different ability, and disability come together as one to compete .
The only main difference is in para sports people need adaptions so they can compete and win, when I watch para sports I don't focus on disability, rather as athletes turning up to win.
I am using sport as a example however there are so many others, such as in education, business, media and so on, there is an expectation"no you can't do it" , then you go onto prove them wrong, that's all about overcoming barriers and changing perceptions.
Prejudice, whether obvious, or underlying, pushing people to be more determined to do, whether you have a disability, Lgbtq+ , or ethnic minority.
There seems to be an awareness week or month for many disabilities nowadays , but for me I champion disability issues every day, so in a way it would be great if we didn't have awareness days , because that would mean the world is an equal platform for all.
I think for me it all starts in early years education, that way young children would develop an awareness of the barriers which many people face in today's society. I'm not saying this would solved all preconceptions , but it would start more conversations about the inequality of it.
When we talk about labels it ties in to human rights because in today world people human rights are still not met. We hear every day on the news about it, this could be transport to employment ,and everything in between.
We need to stop all this and we just need to look past the disability and see the person, their quality and ability.
